To provide a ‘best-possible’ learning environment for children and young people with special educational needs, that reflected and augmented both the modernity and specialist functionality of the building whilst complementing the surrounding green spaces and mature oak woodland, and brick-built suburban landscape beyond.
The architect worked closely with Ibstock and Main Contractor Wilmott Dixon to develop a linear design based on strong external brick facades, punctuated along their length by timber-effect cladding and dramatic colour-rendered external panels. Laid in classic stretcher bond, the Queensbury Yellow Multi brickwork is subtly accentuated by the use of 3mm recessed joints in light buff mortar. Manufactured less than 25 miles from the site, the brick presents a warm natural hue to perfectly complement the associated build materials and the surrounding suburban landscape, whilst helping to minimise the build’s carbon footprint and contribute to an anticipated BREEAM ‘very good’ rating.
