To improve visibility and define the public approach to the new Thameslink station, which is located away from the main street frontage and partially obscured by a sloping embankment and avenue of protected lime trees.
The embankment was levelled to make way for a 100 metre linear pavement, backed by a 2 metre high palisade wall. To create a unique visual and link the wall seamlessly into the main building concourse, the architects chose Ibstock’s Umbra Sawtooth Glazed bricks. Inspired by the foliage of the adjacent lime trees, bricks graduate in colour from dark green to lime green as the wall approaches the station entrance. At night, the area is washed with light by luminaires concealed in the parapet, creating a striking three dimensional backdrop.
