Salford Royal Hospital Extension, Salford

All Case Studies

Challenge

To create a new operating theatre block that responded aesthetically to Salford Royal Hospital site’s recent architectural transformation, whilst meeting the Trust’s budget restraints.

Solution

Although the original brief foresaw modular packaged theatres, Day Architectural were able to develop an innovative and sustainable design that offered huge cost savings to the Trust. Three state-of-the-art operating theatres and ancillary spaces are accommodated within the new extension, which is faced with stack bonded Ibstock Staffordshire Slate Blue brickwork and terracotta rainscreen cladding, a combination chosen for its visual appearance and longevity. Visually linking all of the horizontal elements together, the vertical stairwell forms a strong architectural anchor, further emphasised by the dramatic stack bonded format of the brickwork.
